Firstly well done for the great team effort at home to Hadleigh last Sunday, who are normally a fairly strong team to play against. This was a great performance from all and although the Wolves were a little slow to start you all soon got into the rhythm, with some lovely rugby.
To recap we agreed to play 15 minute quarters to give the boys the maximum game time. Therefore total match and training game time was 60 minutes
Wolves vs Hadleigh
In Quarter 1 the Wolves started slowly and let the big Hadleigh ball carriers run at them, and found it difficult to get any momentum. The Wolves sustained multiple waves of attack and held the pressure really well, however the Wolves were however a little slow in the contact areas (we needed to work on our line speed in defence).
Jacob scored a great individual try to give the Wolves a slim advantage going into the break.
The interval team talk certainly helped steer you into increasing the levels of intensity which you clearly took on board in the second Quarter and this set the tone of the game going forward.
The Wolves starting to dominate in all aspects of the game, and really starting to control from the midfield. There was a great physical battle between both sets of forwards and the defence was ferrous at times.
Hadleigh could not control the breakdown and we saw powerful ball carrying from the forwards, strong sniping runs from the base of the contact area and excellent attacking back play. This is what we now have become accustom to seeing from the Wolves. Well done to all!
There was some fantastic forward play and this sucked in a lot of the Hadleigh boys to contest at the breakdown, opening up vast areas of space for the pace we have in the back line to exploit those gaps.
We also asked the boys to start to play head up rugby and look for opportunities to change the way we played and we saw this with layers of runners and cross field kicks coming into play.
The team talk during the intervals was to continue to take every opportunity but also to mix up the play between backs and forwards.
The Wolves ref’d the first 2 quarters and Hadleigh ref’d the final 2 quarters. The key thing is that refs will ref what they see and sometimes get it wrong, however we always need to respect the decision and just get on with it. So please remember this. Thank you.
Quarters 2, 3 & 4 were generally one way traffic as Hadleigh could not keep up with the physicality, speed or commitment of the Wolves. That being said Hadleigh did get a consolation try in the final Quarter and this was good for them and their development.
Quarter 1 Score Wolves 5 : 0 Hadleigh Scorer Jacob (1)
Quarter 2 Score Wolves 20 : 0 Hadleigh Scorers Will C (1), Riley (1), Seb (1) & Sol (1)
Quarter 3 Score Wolves 25 : 0 Hadleigh Scorers Will C (1), Riley (1) & Seb (3)
Quarter 4 Score Wolves 15 : 5 Hadleigh Scorers Seb (1) & Rhys (2)
Final score Wolves 65 : 5 Hadleigh
Players of the Day
Tackle of the day goes to Adam Harwood - Hughes for his excellent tackle down the left wing stopping a certain try from being scored
Support of the day goes to Archie C, Leon D and Freddie B who worked tirelessly in the forwards and produced some fantastic rucking, mauling and support play to open up the space for the backs.
A special mention goes to Will C for great support to Rhys in the final Quarter with when Rhys picked up a cross field kick to score and Will was in support.
Areas were are going to work on Sunday are mixing up the plays by running from deep, counter rucking and introducing elements of a tactical kicking game, which we started to bring into the game yesterday.
