Bury S Edmunds Under 14’s:
BSE 29 – Wymondham 5
Slow start from the Bury forwards had Wymondham playing the first 5-10mins in our half – early knock on gave Wymondham a platform to attack from, but some solid try line defence from the Bury Boys kept them out with them clearing their lines. A Wymondham backline move resulted in a kick over the top of the Bury defence but the ball just wouldn’t go to hand of the No8 running through onto it resulting in a knock on and No try.
After some strong runs from our forwards, specifically Scott McEniry-Brash, Archie Cansdale and Jack Peacock gained us some territory, a slick backline move followed with the ball being moved quickly out to the wing where Josh Bullingham popped up to receive the ball and sprint home under the posts. Stuey Adam then added the extra points.
The game then settled down to forward and back line play that embed and flowed, but Bury retained most of the pitch possession, Bury where penalised a few times and handed possession over through not releasing or handling on the ground in the break down but Wymondham struggled to make significant progress up the pitch, and when they, did strong bury defence and some really aggressive counter rucking (great work from Ryan Bourne and Scott again in the middle of the park) and strong running out of defence pushed the play back down to the Wymondham half of the pitch.
The second try was score after a sustained period of Bury pressure with some strong forward play which resulted in Ryan Bourne picking the ball up from the back of a ruck and he forced his way over in the corner.
Then came the try of the half, again some strong scrummaging from the forwards got the move started, after the first back line move was met with some strong Wymondham defence the ball was recycled, some quick work at the back of a ruck by Josh Barnes got the ball out to the backs and up popped big Jack Peacock (No5…) as a visiting member of the backs at outside centre gained some big yardage, then with some great handling the ball found its self again in the hands of Josh Bullingham out on the left wing and he set off on a storming 60yrd dash to the line betting the advancing defenders for pace and determination on the outside to score under the posts. Stuey Adam added the extra points again and it was Bury 19 Wymondham 0 at halftime.
Bury made a number of changes at half time by agreement as we had a large squad available for our first fixture of the season. The second half started very similar to how the first had finished, bury pressure resulted in a Wymondham mistake giving Bury a scrum, Rhys Jones as now playing number 9 picked the ball up at the back of the scrum and made some significant yardage with a darting weaving run up the blindside only to be stopped just short, there was then a passage of forward play with possession changing hands a number of times, Wymondham kicked to touch and from the resulting line out Rhys again went on a jinking run to force his way over in the corner for Burys 4th try.
Play then ebbed and flowed again with some strong attacks from both sides, Bury handed possession over a couple of times making tactical errors in the Line out, something for us to work in training but Bury defended strongly and made good ground again with the ball in hand. A strong bury attack push played towards the Wymondham try line again and after strong forward play Josh Wallis secured the ball at the back of a maul to break free and force his way over in the corner again. The game then settled again to good attacking and defending rugby from both sides, both teams where keen to get the ball out wide to the backs and it was great to watch. Wymondham after a strong attack got the ball out wide to their very quick and strong No15 who after breaking a couple of tackles made his way over for their 1st try, the resulting conversion was missed and was shortly followed by the final whistle – final score Bury 29 – Wymondham 5
Many thanks to Ref Mike Berry, a well referred game! And the catering team all the boys enjoyed the post-match meal!
