Chris, 24, is a home-grown player having joined Bury rugby aged twelve. After a stint playing for Cambridge RFC, Peterborough Lions RFC and Luton RFC, he returned to the Club for the 2012/13 season, playing an integral part in the success of the unbeaten 1XV squad as it topped the London 1 North division and was promoted to National League 3 London and SE.
Chris, who plays on the wing, is a PE teacher at County Upper School, having graduated from Bedfordshire University with a sports science degree.
“We are delighted to announce the appointment of Chris as the new 1stXV and Club Captain”, said Playing Chairman Terry Sands. “He’s a first class player who has demonstrated not only superb skills on the pitch but off them too. He is admired hugely by the club’s management, coaching team and fellow players and will lead the team with determination as they take on their next big challenge, reaching National League 2.”
“Chris replaces Matt Edison who has been an outstanding captain over the last two seasons and who has stepped down from the leadership role to concentrate on his career. Matt will continue as a player for the 1stXV and has also agreed to take up the position of assistant forwards coach,” added Sands.
Commenting on his appointment Chris Snelling said, “It’s an honour to be selected as captain, and particularly so as it’s the club that I started playing for at twelve and where I learnt to love the sport. I am excited for the season ahead. We’re a strong knit squad, a band of brothers and together are committed to working hard and delivering great results.”
The IXV’s next home game is this Saturday 13th September at 3pm against Hertford RFC.
