Anyone who remembers the reverse fixture between our clubs may be surprised by this weekend’s scoreline. Ely proved a strong and committed side - pushing the Wolfhounds hard across 80 minutes. With that in mind, Bury named their strongest squad to date in anticipation of another competitive encounter.
However, by midweek, Ely had just 13 players available across the club - placing the fixture in doubt. In true rugby fashion, they rallied - drawing on players from across their senior section - to ensure the game went ahead and made the journey to The Haberden.
Despite a heavy defeat against a clinical Bury side, Ely’s efforts cannot be overstated. Every player who wore the jersey did so with pride - competing with bravery, determination and spirit until the final whistle. It was rugby in its truest form.
The Tigers were gracious in defeat - and players, staff and supporters came together in the bar afterwards, embodying the values of the game.
The scoreline will fade - but the commitment shown to fulfilling the fixture will not. Our sincere thanks go to Ricky Neale, Tim Mills and everyone involved for making it happen.
