Match Report | Bury St Edmunds IV v Clacton Kestrels

By Matt Hayes.

The mighty Rovers emerged victorious in their final fixture of the 24/25 season, securing a significant win at home against Clacton Kestrels.

Anticipation at the Haberden was at fever pitch for the game, which has become something of a derby match in recent seasons. With Clacton claiming the spoils in all meetings for the last 2 years, the Bury Boys were keen to show the fruits of Head Coach Scott Rannochan’s labour since taking over in August.

The game was played in glorious conditions, the sun shining, and a stiff wind which the Rovers had on their side in the first half. Bury finished the first 40 with a strong lead, ensuring that Clacton had to work hard in the second. Lack of discipline allowed Clacton back into the game in its latter stages, but some supreme defensive sets ensured that Bury stayed ahead throughout.

An excellent kicking game, hard work from the forwards, and exceptional work out wide from the backs saw tries scored by Herlihy (10), Firbank (4), and a brace by Mulhall (12) - all were successfully converted.

In the end, it was the superb running threat and try saving jackal turnover from Fish (15) which earned MOTM. The DOTD award was shared by Firbank (4) and Head Coach, Scott Rannochan, for their ‘poor manners’ on the sidelines!

Rovers skipper Hayes (5) said “This was an immense effort from all involved. A very special win for us in this unofficial derby match. It was great for us to be able to send off retiree Jake Sadler with a victory. A huge thanks to the incredible supporters who came down and cheered us on."
