Match Report by Andy Herlihy

Bury v Rochford Saturday 4th March 3 pm KO

Rochford kicked off this match hoping to build on their morale-boosting home win last week and the early exchanges belonged to them. Rochford should have scored following a number of phases but were adjudged held up when scoring seemed the easier option. Rochford continued to press and enjoyed much territory and possession without reward. They were punished by a ruthless Bury attack with the man of the match Tom Brown to the fore, Ciaran Leeson scoring a try converted by Charlie Reed.

Bury 7-0 Rochford

A Bury scrum, a back row move and a strong carry from Brown allowed an easy run in for Charlie Reed the conversion was missed.

Bury 12-0 Rochford

From the restart Bury attacked once more and from a scrum some sublime handling resulted in a try for Mike Stanway, but the conversion was missed.

Bury 17-0 Rochford

Stanway thought he'd scored his second however eagle-eyed Referee Jack Sutton spotted some crossing and the effort didn't count.
On the stroke of half time Bury were awarded a penalty deep in Rochford territory, from the scrum option and a few close phases Lewis Jeffery finished strongly, Reed converted.

Half-time Bury 24-0 Rochford

The second half continued in the same vein as the end of the first with Bury clinical in possession, a number of phases ended with a try for Harry Hall converted by Reed.

Bury 31-0 Rochford

Rochford went in search of a score, a penalty turnover, a quick tap, a kick ahead, a fortunate bounce and a second try for Ciaran Leeson, Reed converted.

Bury 38-0 Rochford.

The game settled into a pattern of Rochford making heavy weather of attacking, Bury counter-attacking allowing a bit of a midfield arm wrestle. The pattern was broken when a Bury scrum penalty was quickly taken, Stanway made good ground off his wing, play spread wide and a try for George Grigg Petitt converted by Reed.

Bury 45-0 Rochford

Play continued in the same rather boring and uninspiring fashion as before. Bury began to disrupt play with a string of penalties that resulted in a yellow card, Rochford try as they might couldn't make the numerical advantage count. Further Bury penalties and a general warning from Referee Jack Sutton seemed to galvanise Rochford and following a dominant scrum and several phases replacement winger Charlie Owens scored and Chris Dudman converted.

Bury 45-7 Rochford

From the restart Bury went on the offensive with Ben Cooper leading the charge, but he was adjudged to have been held up over the line. Everyone was flabbergasted when the attempted try line dropout hit the post!!
Bury completed the action with a glorious period of play resulting in a second try for Stanway Reed converted.

Final Score Bury 52-7 Rochford

The Bury coaching team will be pleased to have notched over 50 points in a match that they never looked like losing. Some attention will need to be paid to another high penalty count as Bury enter the season finale against some stiffer-looking opposition.

The Rochford coaching team will be frustrated with little or no reward for their undoubted hard work and effort, they will rue coughing up possession so regularly to a team that is becoming renowned for its ruthless counter-attacking prowess.
