We have now passed the midpoint of the season, making this an appropriate time to provide an update on pitch conditions. Since the initial briefing in early autumn, conditions and management priorities have evolved significantly.

Grass that germinated and established early in the season benefited from a mild and damp autumn. These favourable conditions supported strong establishment, with improved root development and healthy grass coverage. The groundsman was able to continue regular mowing well into November, maintaining consistent sward quality. In addition, a high-nitrogen fertiliser was applied to Pitches One and Two, providing an early autumn boost to growth and resilience.

Once sufficient root strength had been achieved, the pitches were aerated using a slitter attachment on a quadraply. Scarification was also carried out using tine attachments to reduce thatch and further improve surface condition.

As pitch usage increased, a more robust maintenance regime was implemented. Regular harrowing and slitting were undertaken to support root aeration and promote effective drainage.

From December onwards, grass growth slowed considerably due to poorer weather conditions, including colder temperatures and reduced daylight. The pitches were also challenged by periods of extreme wet weather followed by frosts. Pitch One has remained free from waterlogging throughout this period, and no matches have been lost to weather-related conditions. Pitch Two, however, has experienced compaction, leading to some waterlogging and standing water.

Pitches Three and Four have suffered from particularly heavy use, resulting in increased wear and waterlogging. Pitch Four is especially vulnerable. However, during the autumn, the drainage ditches surrounding Pitch Four were dredged and cleared, allowing underlying water levels to remain lower. In addition, the Environment Agency has dredged the adjacent river and cleared its banks. While the river is now running faster and deeper, it has not flooded Pitch Four as it has traditionally done. With drier weather, it is hoped that this pitch will dry out and return to a playable condition.

Pitch One continues to present as a very good playing surface and, despite periods of heavy use, remains in strong condition with good grass coverage.

Ground staff continue to work closely with coaches to ensure that all pitches are used responsibly and treated with care. This collaborative approach is essential to preserving the playing surfaces and maximising recovery potential as spring approaches and growing conditions improve.

At the beginning of the 2025 / 2026 season, Barenbrug became the Official Seed Partner of Bury St Edmunds Rugby Club. Under this title, Barenbrug generously provided provided a generous supply of RPR Sport seed for our Grounds Team to fully rejuvenate our playing surfaces ahead of the 2025 / 2026 season. They have also continued to support our outstanding Grounds Team across the season with unparalleled expertise and service.

We are sincerely grateful to Barenrbug for their continued support and kindness.
