Weekend Preview – Bury St Edmunds Rugby Club

The wait is over. National League 1 rugby has arrived at the Haberden.

After a historic 2025/26 campaign, a new chapter begins on Saturday as our Men’s 1st XV kick off their first-ever National League 1 season – and what an opening fixture we have in store as we welcome London Scottish to the Greene King IPA Haberden.

This weekend’s action:

Men’s 1st XV – host London Scottish on Saturday, 3.00 pm.

The opening fixture provides a fascinating meeting between two clubs arriving in National League 1 by very different routes. London Scottish arrive following relegation from the Championship, while the Bury Boys step into the third tier for the first time after a superb 2025/26 campaign saw them crowned National League 2 East Champions and earn promotion to the highest level in the club’s history.

A new league. A new challenge. And the first opportunity to see the Wolfpack test themselves at National League 1 level. We need the Haberden behind them.

MATCHDAY AT THE HABERDEN

There’s plenty happening beyond the 80 minutes as we kick off a new era of National League rugby at the club.

Our new Fan Village will be open, bringing brand-new food offerings, music and an extended drinks selection alongside our Headline Sponsor, Greene King.

We’ll have three club bars open, with additional service from the Greene King Beer Truck from the moment the gates open – helping to reduce queues and keep the drinks flowing throughout the afternoon.

We’re also delighted to welcome the St Edmundsbury Male Voice Choir, who will provide the soundtrack to the pre-match build-up with a repertoire spanning 1940s swing and classical favourites to spirituals, folk, musical theatre and chart hits.

Match-Day Charity Partner

Saturday’s fixture is in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care, supporting the vital care and services they provide to people facing death, dying and grief across West Suffolk and Thetford.

Getting to the Haberden

With a large crowd expected, parking at the club will be limited. Supporters are encouraged to use the Rougham Lorry Park for overflow parking or leave the car at home and travel with our Official Taxi Partner, A1 Cars.

Please plan ahead and allow plenty of time to arrive before kick-off.

Cashless Payments

Please note that the outside bars and Fan Village will be cashless. Cash will continue to be accepted at the clubhouse bar and entrance gate.

Important – Newly Refurbished Bank

We ask all visitors to please stay off the newly refurbished bank near the Atkins Dellow Sponsors Lounge. It is extremely important that the cordon around this area is not crossed. Thank you for helping us protect the work that has gone into improving this area of the ground.

Women’s 1st XV – begin their pre-season with a trip to Eton Manor under the Friday night lights, kicking off at 8.00 pm.

It will be the first run-out under new Head Coach Stef Liebenburg and an opportunity for a new-look Bury side to test themselves as preparations for the 2026/27 campaign step up.

Youth & Minis

With community fixtures delayed until the week beginning 21 September, our Youth & Minis sides continue their preparations on the training field.

Our Minis begin their 2026/27 season this Sunday, with their first training session getting under way at 9.30 am.

New players are always welcome! For more information, contact minischair@bserufc.co.uk.

A historic season starts here. See you at the Haberden. ??
