Round 28 | 2024/2025

Will Affleck21 Mar - 11:55

Here’s your preview of the weekend’s action, from Club Media Officer, Charlie Woodbridge.

Following a quiet weekend for Bury St Edmunds rugby, we have an exciting week of fixtures this weekend.

We have a full house of fixtures across the club this weekend. However, we only have two senior fixtures featuring at The Haberden this weekend, but we will be showing the women’s Six Nations.

Our boys’ U13s (x2), U14s, U15s and U16s all have exciting fixtures this weekend. The boys’ U13s (x2) have two festivals with one of those featuring in a home festival and the other visiting Norwich Crusaders for a festival. The remaining boys’ age grades sides will be playing Hadleigh, Sudbury and Ipswich, respectively. It’s a huge day for our girls’ age grades as it is Eastern Counties finals day, which is being held at Shelford RFC.

The Colts will be playing in a 10s match away at Norwich RFC, as teams prepare for the annual Rosslyn Park 7s competition next weekend.

The Men’s 1st XV look to continue last weekend’s impressive second half performance, as they look to make a league double over top of the league. They travel to Tonbridge to face Tonbridge Juddians in what will be an extremely tough fixture. This fixture sees Hooker, Ollie Stone, play his last game for Bury St Edmunds before heading home. We thank him for his performances this season and we wish him well for the future.

Director of Rugby, Jacob Ford, has named a largely unchanged side to face Tonbridge, with the backline staying the same. However, due to a couple of injuries to Ben Kelland and George Grigg-Pettitt, second-row Tyler Russell and back-row Ben Sams come in to start. The fixture also sees recent centurion Paddy Robinson named captain, and recent debutant Billy Reid continuing to impress as he makes the bench again.

The Women’s 1st XV look to finish the season strongly to put themselves in prime position to win the league. They require ten points from the remaining three fixtures to guarantee they get promoted as league winners. So, now more than ever, we need to get behind our brilliant Bury St Edmunds Women.

Head Coach, Liam Leeson, has named a strong side to travel to Boston, with Lauren Howard and Elise Richmond returning from injury and Chantelle Higgins captaining the side as she chases her 100th cap. A huge congratulations to Alexis Stone, who is set to make her debut at the weekend as she named on the bench.

The Men’s 2nd XV look to solidify their position in the league as they face Colchester Ravens in a derby-day fixture.

Head Coach, AJ Morgan, has named a strong team for derby-day, with Connor Morris captaining the side. In addition, it’s great to see Joe Collier back in the mix after a lengthy spell out with an ankle injury as he makes the bench for his first appearance post injury.

The Men’s 3rd XV and 4th XV make up the two senior home fixtures for the weekend, as they face Thorney and Ipswich YM, respectively.

The minis have another huge weekend, as all the ages will be competing in a rugby festival at Diss RFC. We wish good luck to all the minis involved.

Once again, we have a full weekend of rugby. As usual, you can find all the squads on the club’s social media channels.
