The U11's travelled to Braintree rugby club for their first outing of the season and returned home with two satisfactory victories over opponents from Braintree RFC and Burnham-on Crouch RFC.
The first game v Braintree presented Bury with a perfect opportunity to give first starts to newly recruited team members and to work on the changes to the game brought on by the introduction of a second row. However it was the Bury old guard that combined early in the match to score the first of four unanswered first half tries, following effective scrumaging from a pack bolstered by the debuting Joel Clifford. Harvey Williams latching on to a smart pass from Max Derbyshire, scored and then convertind Bury's first of the season. This was followed swiftly by a Paddy Mountford effort direct from the re-start.
Bury's confidence grew as the half progressed and following a sustained period of pressure on the Braintree pack, punctuated by some fearsome tackling, Bury added to their tally with an excellent passing move, finished off by a Derbyshire try. Bury finished as they began with an individual effort from Hempstead who coolly converted his score to bring the half to a close. Half Time Bury 24: Braintree 0
The Bury coaches used the second half to make changes and evaluate players in different positions. This, combined with a much improved Braintree second half, resulted in a closer affair that swung either way as both teams enjoyed time in possession, punctuated only by a run of penalties awarded for handling offences. And despite a second catch and try from Williams direct from the kick off, Bury were unable to capitalise any further. It was Braintree that scored the final try of the game. A just reward for their improved work rate in the second period. Final Score Bury 29: Braintree 5
The second fixture of the morning saw Bury play Burnham on Crouch. The second opposition of the day presented an altogether different set of challenges for a Bury squad short of match fitness. Despite this Bury managed to see off determined opponents with Harvey Williams tries in both halves, the first of which was converted by Ollie Thompson, either side of an unconverted Burnham try. This match was an altogether sterner test for Bury but ultimately both fixtures provided the team coaches with invaluable information about the areas that Bury will need to work on. Particularly if they are to repeat the level of success they achieved last year. Final Score Bury 12: Burnham 5
