The last day of the Mini’s rugby season saw Bury St Edmunds Under 11s travel up to Oakham for the Leicester Tigers Land Rover cup. As winners of the Tigers Prima cup last year the boys received a special invite to the event.
In their pool Bury met two of the teams that gave them some great matches in the Prima cup last year.
First up was Oakham itself. The improvements in the opposition from last year were clear to see and they held Bury to a very tight game. By the end of the first half both times had scored, with Paddy Mountford supplying Burys.
In the second we saw the boys, especially Williams and Thompson, tackling with amazing strength. Unfortunately decided a number of attacks from both teams and strong defence from Bury it was Oakham who added the next try. Bury were never quite able to break through their defence and the game ended 2-1 to Oakham.
After some time to recuperate and build up spirits the boys returned to the pitch to face Melbourne. We knew these were formidable opponents as they gave us great rugby in the Prima cup final last year. They proved they were still a great team to face. With Bury making the first attack and some amazing runs it looked like Bury might break through. Bury confused the opposition with some misleading passes and at one point Max Derbyshire was yards from a try when he was tackled to touch. After a game worthy of professionals the two teams ended with a 0-0 draw, reflecting the strong defence both teams had.
The boys knew now that they couldn’t progress any further in the cup but showed the rugby spirit they have matured with as they entered the final game.
The match against North Walsham saw the Bury boys burst into colour as they attacked the opposition from the start, there was never an opportunity for North Walsham to break through and by the end of the match there were tries from Harvey Williams (2), Fergus Vickery, Paddy Mountford and Max Derbyshire.
It was a day of mixed emotions, Bury had lost, drawn and won but as Melbourne also achieved the same results it became a 2nd place tie for the two adversaries in their pool. A great day of rugby to end the season on and a joy to see the boys show the true spirit of rugby in their play on and off the pitch.
