Dear all,

Well another very muddy match but clearly not as much mud as at Shelford last week!

Well done to all of the boys who were able to play on Sunday from the Wolves and I hope you enjoyed the matches.

We faced 2 balanced Colchester teams (although one was certainly stronger) and they were very certainly physical especially in the first game the Wolves played. That being said you matched them for commitment and produced 2 performances you can be proud of.

We did seem to lose some of the intensity that we had seen at Shelford previously, the speed to the breakdown was much slower and you were allowing Colchester to run at you with some pace. This is something we will work on in training next week

Tackle of the Day goes to William Cameron for his try saving tackle in the first game and Player of the Day goes to Isaac Parsons for really getting stuck into tackling and a fantastic tackle on their scrum half in the second game. Well done to you both and more of the same next week please.

U11 Wolves Match report vs Colchester

Colchester 1. The first game was a physically tough match and Colchester had one boy who was quick, strong and very large compared to some of the Wolves. Colchester used him as the center of their attack. However, it was the Wolves who, opened up the scoring with a strong straight run from Seb crashing through a number of tackles. Colchester responded quickly as Charlie, Bernard and William tried to stop the large Colchester forward from reaching the line but he managed to twist to ground the ball. There was end-to-end play and some great rucking from Freddie, William and Bernard & Cameron secured a number of turnover balls. The backs were also strong at going forward quick ball from Connor with Charlie, Will S and Finn constantly in support and making gain line breaks but it was Colchester who scored next with a well worked passing move to release their winger into the corner. Will C responded almost immediately as a loose kick was well taken and from well inside his own half ran at full tilt, jinking his way past a number of defenders to score in the corner. Unfortunately from the restart, the Wolves knocked it on and with the advantage Colchester scored a third try just before the break. (HT 10:15). In the second half we asked for more intensity and this was evident from the restart. Great pressure from Adam & Fred, let Colchester to hand off and with a penalty Seb opened up the scoring of the second half and a text book 2 v 2 and a perfectly timed pass from Will C saw the defence split open. Colchester not to be out done mounted wave after wave of attack but a solid defence from Jack, Adam, Freddie and Fred kept Colchester at bay. Colchester were close to scoring but a fantastic try saving tackle from Will C denied them this opportunity. The Wolves did score again after a quick ball from Isaac gave and a clean break by Seb and followed by switching a lovely ball into Will C path to give the Wolves the advantage. Finally however the Wolves dam burst and Colchester score a final try to make it a fair reflection of the game. It was a well-contested and fair result from 2 evenly matched teams. Well done boys!

Result Wolves 20 : Colchester a 20

Scorers Seb Brindley 2 & William Cameron 2

Key things to think about from next time: Holding your position, not getting sucked into the contact area, closing the space down quicker in defence and ensure that if you are in the forwards that you work together both in attack and in defence.

Colchester 2. This was clearly the weaker Colchester team with a lot of big physical boys but with very little pace. The forwards of Freddie, Adam, Fred and Jack constantly secured the ball, Connor released Seb for the first try. The second try from Will C was a trademark length of the pitch run from full back using his pace around the outside to score in the corner. The backs were moving the ball well from Charlie to Finn, to Will S and this released Seb and a classic 2v1 with Finn in support saw Finn score in the corner. Colchester did respond from a driving maul just before the break. (HT 15:5). At half time we asked for quicker distribution and to continue to win the contact areas. Adam did a number of his barn storming runs, Fred and Freddie secured the ball on numerous occasions down the left flank. Adam, Cameron, Bernard and Jack marshaled the right flank with Isaac distributing the ball well from scrum half and who also put in some fabulous tackles on his opposite number resulting in numerous knocks by Colchester. The Wolves did allow Colchester to score after as one of their players stepped through most of the Wolves defence, which seemed to go to sleep. However some excellent individual tries from Will C and Finn saw them run the whole length of the pitch to score. Seb scored another and set up Will C’s second of the half through a delightful off load before Will C sealed a fine victory with a trademark Full Back receive and run back at the defence.

Result Wolves 40 : Colchester 10

Scorers Finn Osgood 2, Seb Brindley 2 & William Cameron 4

We have training on Sunday so we will be working on tackling, rucking and defence.

Overall a good morning of rugby and a fair result of: 1 win and a draw, so well done and see you next Sunday which is training at home.

With kind regards

Ed, Matt & Paul
