Firstly well done for the great team effort yesterday at home to Newmarket. This was a great performance from all and you were getting better and better as the games progressed. The interval team talk certainly helped steer you into increasing the levels of intensity, the defence was ferrous at times and Newmarket could not control the breakdown. We saw powerful ball carrying from the forwards, strong sniping runs from the base of the contact area and excellent attacking back play.
To recap we agreed to play 16 minute quarters to give the boys the maximum game time. However I did stop it a couple of minutes early in the last quarter as the boys were ruthless in their try scoring opportunities, and you could see the Newmarket boys starting to lose their motivation.
Wolves vs Newmarket
In Quarter 1 the Wolves started slowly and let the big Newmarket ball carriers run at them, after withstanding the first 3/4 minutes of pressure, the Wolves woke up - just the shock they needed and started to front up to the Newmarket players. It then started to become 1 way traffic with the Wolves running in 4 tries.
The pep talk was to continue to take every opportunity but also to mix up the play between backs and forwards. We stopped a couple of the boys from scoring to encourage support play and this produced a great commitment from all players to be actively involved The 2nd Quarter was a continuation of the 1st with the Wolves running in a further 5 tries with only a single try being conceded.
At the interval, we told the boys that we were going to penalise the Wolves (to balance the game) more than Newmarket to really encourage Newmarket to raised their game. We also asked them to raise their level of defence and increase the intensity and pressure. We let a number of knock ons etc go and this did give then Newmarket players a bit of stimulus. We continues to exclude a few of the boys from scoring and this meant that a number of others who are always in support got onto the score sheet. The Wolves scored a further 4 tries but Newmarket did manage to get over the try line to score twice.
In the final Quarter we asked boys to take every opportunity, maintain the intensity and any of the boys could score. This was all one way traffic and we eventually stopped it a few minutes early as Newmarket could not keep up with the physicality, speed or commitment of the Wolves.
Final Score 18:3 Scorers Fin O (1), Freddie R (1), Rhys J (2), Riley A (2), Jacob D (3), Will C (4) & Seb (5)
Players of the Day
Tackle of the day goes to Connor C who worked tirelessly in both attack and defence but really put in some excellent tackles
Support of the day goes to Freddie R who was always in support and this was rewarded with a great try in the 3rd Quarter.
Areas were are going to work on next week are mixing up the plays by running from deep and introducing elements of a tactical kicking game, which we started to bring into the game yesterday.
