Well done for the great win versus Haverhill today. Although the Wolves were a little slow to get into their stride as we saw by the score difference in the first and second periods.
With the limited space Haverhill played Hadleigh first. Once the U8 had cleared their part of pitch 3 the Wolves got to play Haverhill while the Bears played Hadleigh. We had hoped that we would be able to played Hadleigh but we just ran out of time with the Youth game being played, so we will have to wait to the New Year to play them.
Wolves vs Haverhill
We started by placing some boys into new position to help them understand some of the requirements of those roles. It should also be mentioned that Haverhill had 4 U13's playing for them so this was a good physical test.
The Wolves initially were a little unstructured and Haverhill used their big older boys with good effect as they we strong and physical so carried well. We seemed to be constantly chasing the ball, lost our positional structure and at times we could of thrown a blanket over the entire 12 players. That being said the Wolves were still very strong both in attack and defence in the first half, we moved the ball well and there was some exceptional support play from a number of players.
The commitment in the first half from the entire squad was superb and everyone was physical in defence, this led to a number of turnover balls, which was great to see against a team that was substantially bigger in size. The first half was a good challenge and the Wolves led 3:1 at the break.
In the second half we asked for an increase in physicality, we wanted the boys to run straight and hard and for the support play to continue as it was in the first half. This was a superb second half performance as the Wolves swept aside Haverhill, scoring 8 times in 12 minutes without a single try in response. This was the Wolves at their best. Well done boys
Final Score 11:1 scorers Rhys Jones (1), Jacob Denwood (1), Sol Moody (2), Will Cameron (3) & Seb (4)
As you know we are not concerned about the score but what we have learnt as a team both in attack and defence. For the coaches were are not focussed on who scores the tries but we want to see how those tries are scored, eg was it a turnover ball from strong physical defence, was it in open play or was it fast flowing straight running. Key to all of these are tackling and support which is why we focus on these two areas specifically, so:
Tackle of the Day goes to Josh Barnes for a stunning tackle down the left wing on one of the large U13 Haverhill boys. Well done Josh
Support of the day goes to Rhys Jones, who was constantly in support, tracking the ball and picked up a difficult bounce pass to score in the corner. Well done Rhys.
