Match Report - Michael Anderson

The lads certainly weren't feeling blue after a fantastic team display of Sevens rugby to dominate the U13’s RHS Suffolk 7's and win the Trophy final. We couldn’t have wished for better weather conditions or pitches for this team of flyers.

After a rigorous warm up and quick refresher on our Sevens specific skills the tournament got under way. First up were Mistley and the lads were ruthless from the first whistle and did not allow Mistley to get a sniff of the ball. The lads were on fire defensively, maintaining a quick line speed throughout put Mistley under massive pressure throughout. This being their first game of the season they were simply unable to retain the ball and could not live with the BSE ferocity at the breakdown or pace in attack, the Bury blues took the spoils 9 tries to 0.

Next up were Ipswich who were clearly full of confidence coming into the game on a 25 game unbeaten streak. The challenge was on and the lads stepped up immediately in this closely fought contest. Ipswich work the ball extremely well from left to right but were trying to play Rugby Union in a Sevens competition. The Blues line speed in D meant that Ipswich were always under pressure and as soon as a player became isolated the Blues took possession and hit them on the counter. The lads were also holding their shape/width extremely well meaning in attack/counterattack we would always have at least a 2 on 1 and in D would rarely beaten on the outside. The lads were also now getting to grips with the pocket man which was giving us plenty of time and space to play. The lads put on a great performance to win the game 3-1 and top the pool to go into the Finals of the Trophy competition.

The Cup semi final saw us up against our local rivals Stowmarket who were also very confident going into the game having faced Bury on plenty of occasions previously. The Blues were also growing in confidence with each game and continuing to develop their systems of play. From the off the lads suffocated any attacking intent from Stowmarket as they continued to get into the opposition faces. The lads communication was now also picking up and each and everyone of them began digging deeper and working ever harder for the badge and their teammates. The lads put on a dazzling display of heads up rugby that Stowmarket simply could not live with. The lads took the game 6-2 with some of the Stowmarket boys losing their cool at the end which we took as a compliment.

The final beckoned and a date with a massive Southwold team who had beaten us at their place by a single try only a couple of weeks ago. We had a chat about mind set with a couple of the lads being a little concerned about the size of the opposition and got fired up for the contest ahead. The lads got off to a slower start and allowed Southwold a couple of early scores. All the chat was now coming from the players as they began solving the problems on field and putting their game plans into place. The lads soon struck back and were starting to dominate in all areas of the field, the lads speed and ferocity in D meant that Southwold could only go sideways or back in Attack and all mistakes were being punished with the Blues lightning counter attacks. A truly inspiring performance from each and everyone of these boys who gave their all for each other and thoroughly deserved the reward to take the Suffolk 7s Trophy with a 7-4 victory in a hard fought final.
