Woodbridge Festival U11’s - Winners
Bury St Edmunds 10 : Stowmarket 5
Bury started well and with a well won scrum the ball flowed from the scrum half Harry Wicks to inside centre Oliver Brindley who released outside centre Sam Batterbee to score in the corner.
The second Bury try again came from the back of the scrum this time with fly half Peter Davies breaking 2 tackles before releasing Sam Batterbee to score his second.
Strong drives from the Bury pack of Andreas van Doorn, Matthew Farrance, Levi Roper, Harry Sommerville, Josh ling and Joseph Rainford meant that most of the ball was won and secured in the breakdown. Bury were now starting to dominate in open play but could not convert these into points.
With one lapse of concentration and with Bury attacking, a ripped ball allowed Stowmarket to score.
Ipswich 0 : Bury St Edmunds 10
A hard fought first half saw the teams even 0:0 at the break. Bury had been unlucky not to score through good moves from Sam Batterbee, Oliver Brindley, Peter Davies, Matthew Farrance and Joseph Rainford.
In the starting minutes of the second half Bury won a line out 5 mtrs from the Ipswich line with Harry Wicks feeding the ball quickly to Levi Roper who powered through the Ipswich defence to score.
Bury now started to gain in confidence and moved the ball freely through the backs with good running from Craig Newcombe, Michael Huck and Andreas Van Doorn .
Wave upon wave of Bury pressure attacked the Ipswich line. Strong running from Peter Davies and Oliver Brindley pushed Ipswich back to their 10mtr line. The ball secured in the ruck by William Allingham and Josh Ling forced Ipswich to make a mistake and concede a penalty. A quick tap and go released Levi Roper to power through for his second.
Bury St Edmunds 5 : Sudbury 0
The Sudbury match was probably going to be the toughest of the pool with both teams winning their first two matches it was likely to be the decider for the Pool winner
The match was hard fought from the opening whistle, with all players giving their club their absolute commitment. With some changes to the 2nd row Angus Crossley and George Rose came on and gave outstanding performance pursuing the ball in the contact area.
With constant pressure from the pack, Sudbury conceded a penalty 5mtrs from their line and with a quick restart Levi drove through to score. In the dying moments a Sudbury forward charged down the wing beating 2 Bury players but an excellent covering tackle from Oliver Brindley with Sam Batterbee stopped a certain try and sealed the Bury win.
Lowestoft 5 : Bury St Edmunds 10
Bury were clearly dominant in the open play and the forwards secured well in the breakdown. Two excellent individual tries came from a jinking run from Oliver Brindley and a full length of the pitch sprint from Jack McGaley
With Bury starting to cruise their concentration lapsed and through a missed tackle allowed Lowestoft to scored in the corner but Bury had secured the win and finished as Pool A winners
Final
Hadleigh 0 : Bury St Edmunds 0
In the final the match was always going to be tight with Hadleigh unbeaten in the other pool. The sides were evenly matched and strong forward pressure meant the game was physically draining.
Every player on the field gave their team and team-mates absolutely everything. The final outcome of a draw was a fair result for each team with Bury and Hadleigh sharing the Title.
Player of the Day : George Rose for his excellent attacking of the ball in the breakdown area, good technique in contact and a strong team commitment.
