Bury came away with the spoils in a hard fought cup match on Sunday. The first 20 minutes saw neither side make a breakthrough.Bury dominated possession with the forwards clearing rucks powerfully. Despite a number of line breaks Bury could not find a way through. The Colchester defence was impressive especially close to their own try line where a number of times we were turned over when a try looked certain. Eventually some good works by the forwards Archie charged through to score under the posts with Stu knocking over the extras. Shortly after bury where on the attack again but Charlie Was unable to finish off a try after a brilliant run just straying over the dead ball line.
The second half saw Colchester start strongly before Bury began to play some of their best rugby. The support play and offloading at times was superb, with Ryan piling over from short range after one such break. Scott then smashed over from a 5m scrum . Colchester then pulled one back before Bury went down the other end and after some good pick and go work we scored the 4th try (sorry not sure who got it - will update this report when confirmed), with Stu scoring the conversion. Colchester scored a good try which they converted with the last play of the game. Fair play to the Colchester lads for going right to the end, and for their commitment in defence.
It was a great team performance from the whole Bury squad. The forwards smashed the rucks which meant the backs had plenty of good ball throughout the game. We went low in the tackle which stopped their big runners and our scrum was strong throughout . It was a step up again from last week. This was our best performance of the season so far.
Good luck to Colchester for the rest of the season. Their skipper who took a heavy knock but was okay which was good news. Thanks to Rob Hasselder for reffing again and doing such a good job. Colchester picked Scott as our man of the match. Finally, happy Christmas all! Can’t wait to pick up again in the new year and build on this performance.
