Vixens vs Phoenixes - Friendly in the rain.

A bonus friendly in Newmarket saw the U16s being one of only a few teams playing this weekend!
Our Bury U16 Vixens travelled away this week to a rain-soaked Newmarket for a friendly match against the Phoenix’s.
Whilst the weather was cold, wet and windy, the pitch was playable and the match got underway on time at 2.15pm, with both sides fielding a full team of 15 players.
With the home side winning the toss, the opening passage of play saw Bury with the majority of ball and territory possession, and despite the slippery handling conditions, some passing sequences showed early promise, with no reward.
As the match went on, the Phoenix’s started to get a foothold and went over for the first try, wide on the left after 14 minutes. The Vixens rallied well following this set back and continued to exert pressure on the home team, with improved intensity into the breakdowns. The Phoenix’s found themselves pushed back into their 22 with Bury not allowing them time to build any momentum, forcing them into touch for the first line out of the match. Despite the home side initially winning the line out, the Vixens pounced on a loose ball and Sophie Arnott powered over for Bury’s first try of the match to even the score up at half time to 5-5.
Bury picked up in the second half where they left off, with fine passing and handling considering the challenging conditions, taking the game to the opposition with good territory in their 22. This time the away side were rewarded for their play with Roo scoring the Vixen’s second try of the match under the posts, which Kaitlyn converted well thereafter to make the score 12-5 to Bury.
The Vixens by now were in the ascendency and starting to show what they are capable of with a fine team try soon after, picking the ball up in their own half, moving with pace and fluidity enabling Sharon to score the away side’s 3rd try to bring the score to 5-17.
By now all the momentum was with Bury and following a scrum in their own half, the Vixen’s found themselves moving further clear of the Phoenix’s with Roo scoring her second try of the match with a swallow dive that Chris Ashton would be proud of. This followed some great team set up play. Kaitlyn subsequently converted her second conversion of the day, making things 24-5 to the visitors.
Straight from the kickoff, Kaitlyn demonstrated her fine kicking ability by sending the ball back into the home side’s half, then chased with pace to win possession enabling the Vixens to feed the ball across field to Harriet to finish a lovely move with her well-deserved superb try under the posts. Kaitlyn duly converted her third kick to bring the final score to 31-5 to Bury – a well-deserved victory which ALL the girls can be proud of and build on for the rest of the season.
